I’ve just come back from a trip to DC, where I reset some meridians. I saw some friendly faces, and did a bit of yoga. Oh, and I slept a lot, had a massage, and some great food. Heaven, and creature comforts, all.
I stayed with my dear friends Kathy Freyhof and Mikhail Bezruchko, along with their little ones George and Teddy [shout-outs to Kathy's Whole Foods Arlington and Mikhail's Mikhail Bezruchko Photography.] And my cousin Adele [Yoga with Adele] provided an evening of yin yoga, focusing on the solar plexus. Saints here on Earth to me.
There’s nothing quite like travel to fill the proverbial storybook. For example, the Leslie Knope in me jumped for joy upon meeting Joe Biden’s personal driver, pre-vice-presidentium (in a word). His name is Seyd and he has driven the political (and hollywood) elite throughout the years. Via Uber, I was fortunate to have him as my personal chauffeur for one leg of my trip. A veteran, he has served in many capacities, most recently in Afghanistan as a communications specialist (2009 - 2011).
Seyd came by way of his Uber position on Megan McCain’s recommendation. The last time he drove Joe Biden was on the very day he was called to serve as vice president. Seyd explains, "Joe Biden owes me seven dollars and thirty cents” for that day's regular coffee (cream and sugar), and cinnamon rolls.
When he dropped me off at Kathy's house, he stood outside and asked me to signal when I was safe inside. So upon entering the house, I gave him a wave.
Once inside, Kathy and Mikhail asked how my trip back was.
“It was awesome.” I told them. And I proceeded to describe my driver.
“I know him!” Kathy said, delighted. “He used to come into Whole Foods all the time. He has three daughters in college. He has the best stories!”
He does indeed. A brave soldier, who hung on through an 18-month coma, quietly tapping his finger to signal that he recognized his mother's and wife's voices in the hospital.
"What! Oprah?!" Woah. Like, woah.
On Veteran’s Day, the list of people I thank continues to grow. At top of mind are my familial naval veterans, grandfathers Cook and Singleton, and their wives, nurses Marjorie and Mary Ann, may they rest in peace. And to those we are fortunate to still have here, salut!
